SALMON RIVER IDAHO ADVENTURE
MAY 5 – 7, 2006
(Updated Version, 4/18/06)
Field trips are for the purpose of spending time in the out-of-doors to explore, find interesting rocks and study the many recent evidences of God’s creation, which are in bold testimony of His loving truth and judgment. The first field adventure for 2006 will be in the Salmon River Country of Riggins, Idaho. Springtime in the Salmon River canyons is great for fun explorations; air temperatures will be warm, hillsides will be carpeted with multi-colored flowers, and wildlife will abound.
TRIP EMPHASIS: Evidences for a recent creation are everywhere in the Salmon River country. Metamorphic rocks, from the time of creation, are prominent, along with very steep-sided canyons formed from catastrophic Flood erosion, and post-Flood glacial erosion and deposition in the uplands. Along with the “strange” metamorphic rocks, volcanic rocks and sedimentary rocks are well exposed. Interesting minerals specimens can be collected. Panning for gold will be exciting. Checking out dark, limestone caves for odd-looking stalactites and stalagmites. Participants will be able to even find marine fossils in the Martin Bridge Limestone. Native Americans inhabited these canyons in the past. We will discuss the various tribes that are thought to have lived here and the origin of these peoples.
TRIP DETAILS: Participants will be staying at Prospector’s Gold RV Park and Campground, located 8 miles north of Riggins, Mile Post 204 on U.S. Highway 95, in the town of Lucile, ID. Lucile is a small, quaint town that was established in the early days of gold mining in the area. The Park has plenty of lawn area for tents and for recreational vehicles. Even the tent sites have electric and water outlets. Rest rooms with showers are centrally located. These facilities are situated immediately adjacent to the beautiful, Salmon River.
· Camping Fees: Fees are $16.00 per night for a family with tent or for a family with R.V. Electric and water outlets are at all of the sites. Sewer dump station is located in the park complex. Rest rooms with showers are available for all. Pets are welcome, but must be on a leash.
· Travel: Friday morning, May 5th and Sunday afternoon, May 7th will be considered travel periods. Travel from Boise via Hwy 84 and Hwy 95 to Lucile is about 190 miles or about 3.5 hours at normal speed limits. From Ontario, OR to Lucile the route would be via Hwy 84 and Hwy 95, a distance of about 140 miles or about 2.5 hours travel time.
· Registration: We do require a signup of participants who will attend this outing, so we can plan accordingly. FIGI/O will have signup sheets at our April seminars. Registration can also be accomplished by sending an e-mail to FieldTrip@figionline.com. In the e-mail please tell us your name, your telephone number, the number of people in your family, your camping preference (tent or R.V.), and vehicle size. Or call Brent H. Carter at (208) 375-9592 to register.
· Camping Considerations: Lucile is at elevation 1,800 feet and the uplands vary from 4,000 to 8,000 in elevation. In early May, days will be warm and nights cool. Afternoon thundershowers do occur in the spring. Bring shorts, but also long pants together with short sleeve shirts, long sleeve shirts, coats, hats, and rain gear. Of course, do remember Bible, camera, binoculars, daypack, insect repellent, water bottles, hiking shoes or boots, and sunglasses. Also, do not forget your geology pick, gold pan & zip lock bags (quart size or smaller). We will have the opportunity to pan for gold and garnets.
· Daily Schedule of Activities: Daily activities will be planned; however, this does not mean that all families have to attend all of the activities. We all need some free time. A guidebook will be prepared for participants. Individuals can purchase the book for a nominal fee.
Come prepared to enjoy the wonders of Creation and the Flood that God made especially for us to view, enjoy, study and guide us to better understand the manifold witness of His Grace.
